Creating a Park-Inspired Retreat at the Studio Museum in Harlem
When the Studio Museum in Harlem set out to design its new home, the team envisioned a serene, park-like retreat within the building’s main interior space—a place where employees could pause and reconnect with nature. The challenge? Creating a lush green environment in an enclosed space with no natural light, airflow, or soil—conditions that made live plantings unsustainable.
To bring the concept to life, Horticultural Creations designed and installed a realistic interior landscape using premium faux materials. Artificial olive trees with real natural trunks were selected to provide height and visual interest, while a mix of grasses in varying heights and textures established a dynamic ground layer. Soft lavender sprigs introduced subtle color, and replica boulders were added to ground the installation in natural detail.
The composition sits on a raised, square island, surrounded by benches to encourage rest and reflection. Preserved green moss covers the ground, creating a seamless and calming base that ties the entire installation together.
This park-inspired oasis now functions as a quiet haven within the museum—inviting employees to sit, breathe, and enjoy a connection to nature in an environment where real plants wouldn’t thrive.
